Disable Windows 10 from Autorestarting – Windows Update

These instructions work with Windows 10 Version 1903, Windows 10 Version 1909 and Windows 10 Version 2004. Note however that you may need to to reapply the registry edit after a Feature/Build Upgrade.

This guide will prevent Windows from putting your computer to sleep or autorestarting via Windows Update. For Windows Update, it sends the notification to autorestart to a Debugger, meaning it doesn't count down and perform an autorestart.

Steps in this guide are taken from:

Right click the start button and select Power Options.

Change Sleep to Never and Screen (optionally) to Never:

Press [Windows] and [ r ] and type in regedit and then press enter:

Accept the User Account Control Prompt:

Copy and paste the following into the address bar and then press [Enter]:

To the left hand side expand this key.

Right click and select New Key to create a sub key:

Call this key

Now select it:

Right click blank space and select New → String Value:

Double click it and assign the value to:

Now close the Registry Editor

As you can see from the system clock, and notification area this computer wanted to restart but didn't restart for 2 weeks:
