Introduction

I have updated this guide with respect to different Operating Systems…

64 Bit

32 Bit – Not Recommended

  • It is not recommended to run Windows 7 32 Bit on a UEFI BIOS as the limitation of 4 GB of RAM will severely cripple your hardware. Moreover drivers are usually not available for Windows 7 32 Bit on a UEFI BIOS. Instead of natively installing Windows 7 32 Bit on modern hardware Virtualisation with VMWare is recommended.

    1. It depends on your model of Dell. Check Dell Drivers and Downloads for the latest BIOS revision and check the BIOS setup for the BIOS version.

  1. Hi Rockstar
Will this work for a Dell Inspiron 15 3543 with Windows 8 and upgraded to Windows 10?
Your instructions were given to me by FIX Me Stick

    1. SecureBoot and UEFI should be enabled by default for a system shipped with Windows 8 OEM. What are you trying to do?

  2. hello … I have a dell latitute E6420M i5 with ssd and I upgradeted it to win 10 .. but my bios A22 style in legacy but I have uefi in option .. and when I put it them >>> nothing ?

  3. my dell laptop has pre-installed Windows 7 64 Bit however, Boot List option does not look like this, it has only Boot Priority Order (five options incld. discette, hard drive, cd/dvd, USB…) does it mean it does not have UEFI only legacy? its BIOS settings can be switched btw ATA and AHCI under the Advanced tab.

  4. yes, mine is Inspiron 15 N5050, thats a great link! I was interested in the BIOS Setup cos I managed to install everything except for ' Seagate Momentus 2.5",SATA,3Gb/s,7200,512e Firmware Update' (recommended firmware). it starts running then I get the black screen with 2 columns of numbers on it and freezes. the installation instructions say 'If the firmware flash utility fails to update, please use the legacy mode instead of the BIOS default SATA configuration', and it seems the legacy mode its the only one I've got.

of course i may not need it after all, but am trying to do a clean install so want to achieve the optimum performance (and have nothing to loose!).

  5. Hello… I have a dell inspiron 3543 with preinstalled ubuntu on it. I'd like to remove ubunto and install windows 8.1 from usb pendrive. I formated the pendrive with rufus but it just does not work at all. Can you help me?

  6. I have a Dell XPS 8700 that came with Windows 8. I installed a 2nd HD and a SATA switch that enables me to choose between the two hard drives prior to boot. I installed Windows 7 on the new HD. this required altering the bios to boot from a Windows CD. I installed the programs I desired to the Win-7 disk and then decided to attempt to get Win-10 using the existing Win-8. When I changed the SATA switch, the machine is asking for an alternative boot. I assume I need to configure the boot for the old (existing) HD. Is the access simply f2?

      1. Thank you for your reply. Yes, that is correct. When I attempt to boot I receive this message: "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert media in selected boot device and press a key."
        bios is A09
        SATA-1 is OK
        Secure boot is disabled
        Load legacy 0prom enabled
        Boot mode = legacy

The problem: the SATA with the WINDOWS-7 boots OK.
If I change the bios back to UEFI, what will happen to my Win-7 boot?
Do I leave Secure Boot disabled and enable UEFI?

        All help appreciated.

        Thanks,
        Jack

      2. Follow: I reset the system to UEFI, but now I cannot get into windows because the screen asks me for a password (which i never set nor will ever use). Sigh. I though computing was supposed to be getting easier!

  7. hello. I have window 10. I want to get legacy for window 10 but when I enable legacy mode it doesn't boot to windows, instead it tries to look for a legacy device but I want to switch from uefi to legacy

    1. You will need to reinstall Windows using the MBR partition scheme if you do that. Why do you want to use legacy?

      1. I wouod like to install kali linux rather than using vmware

  8. hi.To reinstall a clean windows 10 after format on a dell inspiron 17 r, I had to disable security boot
and played a while with different settings before I got it to boot on a usb key. Now windows is installed ans working ok but the booting time is very long (used to be in seconds now its in minutes). IS their any stttings I should check to make it go faster. thks.

  10. What is the optimal UEFI configuration to have Hybrid Boot enabled for the Dell Inspiron 5537 15R for UEFI boot? and for Legacy Boot?

  11. I just got a few Precision 7510 and was going to downgrade to 8.1. Also, we have 500GB drives installed. I ran into a problem installing after removing all partitions on original hard drive – "we could not create a new partition or locate an existing one" – and spent a couple hours trying to find a solution for me. I didn't want to change any settings for fear of breaking things once we move to Windows 10.
Here's what I did, I loaded cmd prompt using SHIFT+F10 and ran diskpart. I selected disk 0 and ran clean option, then I ran the command format gpt. I rebooted and started the installation again. What do you know it works. I made no changes to UEFI settings in bios.
So far my system is up and I'm installing drivers and software. Just found this post and thought I'd share. Hope this helps someone.

      1. Hello! The setup:

        1) Dell Optiplex 5040 w/one 750GB HDD w/W10Pro OEM installed
        2) UEFI enabled, Secure Boot disabled, Legacy ROM enabled
        3) your Dell OEM W7ProSP1/SP2 Rollup .iso
        4) 16GB USB flash drive prepped & made active for this .iso w/a copy of the .iso on it
        5) in W10Pro, Disk Mgt, shrank Win10Pro C: partition & created a 256GB W7Pro D: partition
        6) in Win10Pro, mounted your .iso & began W7Pro installation
        7) @ 1st W7Pro restart, F12 to switch to Boot Menu & sel UEFI BOOT: Windows Boot Manager
        8) sel Windows Setup, "Starting Windows"
        9) @ W7Pro startup (@ looping RYGB circles around W7 graphic), startup freezes
        10) BSOD. "STOP: 0X0000007B (0XFFFFF880009A9928, 0XFFFFFFFFC0000034, 0X0000000000000000, 0X0000000000000000)
