Latitude D820 – Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 64 Bit

This model and Operating System is not supported by Dell.

I have however tested this model with Windows 10 64 Bit with the hardware variants:

  • Intel T7200
  • Intel Video 945 Video
  • 4 GB RAM
  • Crucial M500 SSD.
  • Intel 3945
  • Dell Wireless 355
  • PR01X Docking Station – No option to undock from the Start Button but physical undock works once Dell System Software and Dell Quickset are installed.

Legacy BIOS

The Legacy BIOS must be upgraded to A10 before Windows 10 64 Bit is installed… The update won’t run within Windows 10 64 Bit (I ran it in Windows 7 32 Bit):

Recommended hardware Upgrades

This system will only run Windows 7 64 Bit if a 64 Bit processor is installed such as the Intel T7200, T7400 or T7600. Note the maximum RAM this system can address is 3.25 GB (limited by the chipset).

SSD – Solid State Drives

SSD – Solid State Drives

It is recommended to upgrade it to 4-8 GB of RAM:

Note DDR2 RAM is now expensive from reputable vendors like Crucial/Offtek, look on eBay for second hand DDR2-PC2 5300 or DDR2-PC2 6400 200 pin Non-ECC RAM.

Refer to the Service Manual when performing hardware upgrades.

Windows OS

Windows 7 and 8.1 are now obsolete if you have these Operating Systems you should use them to take the Free Upgrade to Windows 10.

If you don’t have a Windows 7/8.1 license you have until the 2nd of October 2015 to upgrade to Windows 10 for free using the Windows 10 Insider 10130 as a stepping stone. See Free Upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 10 (also works with Windows XP).

OS Updates

System utilities

I needed to install this for the Docking Station.

  • Intel 945GM [Variant A – Windows 10 Windows Update Will Automatically Download a Better Driver]
  • nVidia Video [Variant B]

The latest version to install is 8.1200.101.217

3The Intel WiFi Driver is inbuilt. There is a bug with the inbuilt driver. If the system goes to sleep you will be unable to reconnect to the network unless you restart your computer. Disabling power management options may help reduce this:2The Broadcom WiFi is untested should be also.

The BT Dell Wireless 355 should be covered by the Broadcom Bluetooth Update.

For Windows 8.1 the audio driver is inbuilt to the OS and the registry file or older SigMatel Driver should not be installed.

Dell Backup and Recovery

Only install if you have a larger than a 120 GB SSD/HDD

Note this system won’t be able to boot from a Rescue Disk (external hard drive) so make a Factory Backup (Bootable USB Flash Drive).
