It is recommended to upgrade it to 4-8 GB of RAM (8 GB Unofficial):

Refer to the Service Manual when performing hardware upgrades.

Windows OS

Windows 7 and 8.1 are now obsolete if you have these Operating Systems you should use them to take the Free Upgrade to Windows 10.

If you don’t have a Windows 7/8.1 license you have until the 2nd of October 2015 to upgrade to Windows 10 for free using the Windows 10 Insider 10130 as a stepping stone. See Free Upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 10 (also works with Windows XP).

OS Updates

System utilities

Try in order latest first, if it doesn’t work try for an older version.

For Windows 8.1 the audio driver is inbuilt to the OS and the registry file or older Sigmatel Driver should not be installed.

Dell Backup and Recovery

Note this system won’t be able to boot from a Rescue Disk (external hard drive) so make a Factory Backup (Bootable USB Flash Drive).

  1. Hi,

First, thank you for your post.

I have a problem: I put win 7 64 bits on my Dell D530 and do the upgrades as you have mentioned. On XP my DVD drive was working, but now until win7 installed, my DVD drive is inaccessible. “!” is mentioned near it on the “Manager peripherals” window, and it is invisible on the explorer window. It look likes that the DVD drive is not recognized by the system. But when I check for the update of his driver, windows tell me that the DVD drive is already updated. The P/N of the DVD drive is : C3284-A00
    Do you have a issue?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

  2. Hi Robert; I plan to install Win 7 pro on the same laptop Dell Latitude D530. My concern is size of RAM (I have 2 GB) and generally speed of Win 7 on this quite old laptop. I also wonder if 32bit version can be faster than 64bit. What is You opinion ? 64bit version works fine ? What is Your RAM size ?
