    1. The hard drive has failed and needs to be replaced. If its an Inspiron 9300 with Windows XP the drive is IDE. These drives are no longer manufactured and its hard to get a replacement drive which is not about to fail itself. The money is better put together for a newer system. The lowest end Inspiron will be much better.

    1. Have a look into the Inspiron 3531. As mentioned its not worth fixing an Inspiron 9300 because the HDD is IDE and because of the OS being XP. The cost of a new IDE drive (£30 for a low capacity drive) and a Windows license (~£100) is not much more different than the price of this system (~£200) and it will vastly outperform your Inspiron 9300.

  1. As of Oct 27, 2014, Amazon still has several IDE type 2.5" notebook drives, if you still need one. They are priced as low as $14 each for generic drives.

  2. tnx a lot!! just one problem more, the bright, a can make dark my screen but can't make brigthes again!

    1. XP Dell Quickset might not work perfectly for these systems on Windows 7. You can try adjusting the brightness in the Dell BIOS.

  3. Do you know the correct name of the connection on the CD/DVD drive? I am keen to get the best possible remaining use out of my 9300. I'm looking at caddies that might hold a spare SATA drive [that I have already] in place of the CD/DVD drive as a 2nd HDD but I cannot select the right type because I do not know the correct name of the connector.

    1. To be honest you are probably wasting your time with a system that old. It may not support a second hard drive in the optical bay.

Money will be better spent towards a new system (or second hand less old system).
