Ensure you reference your service manual before carrying out upgrades:
The most recommended upgrade for this system is a Solid State Drive, here is my affiliate link to Crucial here. If purchasing a SSD or Memory Upgrade please use these links as I will get a tiny bit of commission which will help fund my guides.
SSD Drive Upgrade
This system supports 2 GB of RAM (2×2 GB Modules). This can also be purchased using the affiliate link above.
Media Direct should be installed before the Operating System in order for the Media Direct Button to function correctly.
It is recommended to install Windows 10 on this system see Windows OEM FAQs and Downloads. The Windows Vista OEM or Windows XP Product Key won't be compatible with Windows 10 Installation Media however you can run Windows 10 Unlicensed. Windows 10 will have most of the system drivers required inbuilt however you can install the Windows 7 Drivers if you have any unknown Devices in the Device Manager.
Drivers and Downloads for Windows 7
System Utilities (Windows 7 Only)
Chipset (Windows 7)
Communications (Windows 7 Only)
Not all systems have a modem. If the Driver fails to install, there is no need to try and install the rest in this category.
Video (Windows 7 Only)
Dell Wireless Cards
Audio (Windows 7 Only)
Install the Registry Edit and then the Audio Driver.
Open up Notepad or Notepad++, copy and paste the above and save the file (as all types) ending with the extension .reg. Once done right click the reg file and run.
Add the entries to your registry before installing the Audio Driver.
Requires installation of the Media Direct Program

Hello! This post is really ***kin nice! I cannot express more how grateful I am but I have to limit my happiness for now. I will upgrade to 8.1 right after this and will refer to this useful page for information! Thank you so much!
Hi! I want to say thank you to the creator of this site. I appreciate your big help for all of us who need this.. God is with you all the time! Take care buddy!

All ppl trying to correct audio problems in Windows 8.1 for Dell inspiron 1420……..just follow this post…..and your problem will installed
First of all, thanks a lot for this site! YOU ARE THE BEST!
Secondly, I have a question to ask.
I'm having a problem with my mouse pointer, as it moves, it lags, dissapears and reappears a bit further in the direction it was headed. I'm not sure how to explain it, but it's really annoying and frustrating.
Do you have any information or know anything about this problem and how to solve it? I've tried everything. I even re-formatted my laptop and installed Windows 7 Ultimate again with no success.
Looking forward for your answere. Thanks in advance
PS: Sorry if I mispelled something, English is not my mother language
how about bluetooth driver?i can't found this driver for my laptop dell inspiron 1420
The guide links to here, it should be the Dell Wireless 355 card: http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/driver-sets/dell-wireless-cards/
My inspiron 1420 has been a great friend for the last 8 years. It runs Vista Home Premium and Office Pro. It was ahead of its time with 4G Ram. and duo core centrino processor. CAN this laptop be rebuilt to use Win7 32 and Office 2013? I've looked at new laptops and they seem very cheaply made!
Windows 7 is becoming obsolete and has reached end of sales and is hard to purchase legally and download. Install Windows 10 64 Bit on it. Use the Windows 10 Insider Build 10130 as a stepping stone to get Windows 10 Pro for free:
After you have Windows 10 Pro installed on this system you can of course install Office 2013.
THANKS AGAIN LES great maid ME YOUR DRIVERS HAVE SAVED THE LIFE THANKS
