System Upgrades

Service Manual

Ensure you reference your service manual before carrying out upgrades:

The most recommended upgrade for this system is a Solid State Drive, here is my affiliate link to Crucial here. If purchasing a SSD or Memory Upgrade please use these links as I will get a tiny bit of commission which will help fund my guides.

SSD Drive Upgrade

Memory Upgrade:

This system supports 8 GB of RAM (2×4 GB Modules) however 8 GB of DDR2 RAM is more expensive than it is worth and the 32 Bit OS maxes out at 4 GB RAM. This can also be purchased using the affiliate link above.

Operating System

It is recommended to install Windows 10 on this system see Windows OEM FAQs and Downloads. The Windows Vista OEM or Windows XP Product Key won't be compatible with Windows 10 Installation Media however you can run Windows 10 Unlicensed. Windows 10 will have most of the system drivers required inbuilt however you can install the Windows 7 Drivers if you have any unknown Devices in the Device Manager.

  1. Hi and thanks, these should all work, except for the BIOS, with a precision M90 shouldn't they?

    1. For the Precision M90 the latest BIOS is A08: http://ftp.dell.com/bios/M90-A08.EXE

Most things are the same between the two models.

However the modem is the Conexant D110 and not the Conexant D330, modems are pretty obsolete and the driver should be inbuilt anyway.

You may also need the Ricoh card reader which should be prescent in the M90 and not in the D830: http://ftp.dell.com/chipset/Ricoh_R5C833_A00_R240788.exe

Oh and also for 64 Bit compatibility you will need the T7200, T7400 or T7600 Intel Processor. Some of these will have the T2300 which has a 32 Bit instruction set only and won't run the 64 Bit version of Windows 7: http://ark.intel.com/products/27237/Intel-Core-Duo-Processor-T2600-2M-Cache-2_16-GHz-667-MHz-FSB

    1. Is the num lock on? The number triangle will work only if num lock is on and scroll lock is off. Then its a case of holding down Fn and pressing the number.

There is no standalone driver for the keyboard however installation of Dell Quickset does help, this should be listed with the drivers.

  2. I can not get my speakers to work after upgrading to windows 10. I know that Dell isn't supporting this model anymore, but the drivers should work?

The volume icon in the system tray area has a x next to it, indicating that the speakers are muted, but when i try to unmute them, there is still not sound

    1. There was an unofficial patch for the Sigmatel drivers for Windows 7 but I have no idea how it'll take with Windows 10.
