Hi Philip,
Do you have any tips on installing windows 8 on a latitude D810? I have a spare license for win 8 and a D810 to put it on. I realise you are not the biggest fan of win 8 for good reasons, but if you can offer any tips it would be greatly appreciated.
Win 8 seems to need slightly less resources than win 7 so may the D810 would be a good machine to use it on. This guy (and a few others) seem to have managed it.

Ensure you have the latest BIOS and video BIOS before attempting to upgrade.
Also ensure that you install Windows 8.1 32 Bit and not Windows 8.0 32 Bit (if the license is retail follow the instructions here). I would install with the generic key and ignore activation warnings until you determine how well it runs (save you wasting a license):

Note there are likely problems with the downloader on an XP system, if there is use the Windows 8.1 32 Bit Enterprize trial to evaluate and then download Windows 8.1 using the trial:

I think everything should work natively except maybe the video. I think your video is going to be your main bottleneck, if it doesn't work well natively with Windows 8.1 have a look at the hardware IDs and then the Microsoft Update catalog for a Vista driver:
