System Upgrades

Service Manual

Ensure you reference your service manual before carrying out upgrades:

The most recommended upgrade for this system is a Solid State Drive, here is my affiliate link to Crucial here. If purchasing a SSD or Memory Upgrade please use these links as I will get a tiny bit of commission which will help fund my guides.

SSD Drive Upgrade

Memory Upgrade:

This system supports 8 GB of RAM (2×4 GB Modules) however 8 GB of DDR2 RAM is more expensive than it is worth and the 32 Bit OS maxes out at 4 GB RAM. This can also be purchased using the affiliate link above.

Operating System

It is recommended to install Windows 10 on this system see Windows OEM FAQs and Downloads. The Windows Vista OEM or Windows XP Product Key won't be compatible with Windows 10 Installation Media however you can run Windows 10 Unlicensed. Windows 10 will have most of the system drivers required inbuilt however you can install the Windows 7 Drivers if you have any unknown Devices in the Device Manager.

  1. Dell Latitude D531 Windows 8.1 32 bit

Video : I am unable to get any of the driver to work reliably.
    1. AMD Legacy Driver – This works the best as Windows would install it correctly but occasionally on boot up when Windows gets to the login screen it would just be completely black. I then have to reboot the laptop and the login screen would then display correctly and Windows would be fine after that – until next reboot. To install this run the exe and the install fails as it can’t find the hardware. Then in Device Manager browse to the C:\ATI folder and the driver will install correctly.
    2. Microsoft Catalog – This driver is not compatible with Windows 8.1 and would not install.
    3. Dell Vista Driver – This would install ok but on each and every boot up – the login screen would never display – just got a black screen. Even if you login to Windows the screen would always be black.

Touchpad : Use the version 8.1200.101.217. Works perfectly.

Wireless/Wired LAN: Windows 8.1 built in drivers work perfectly.

  2. Went from Win XP pro to Win 10 10130 and then Win 10 pro via Windows 10 Media Creation Tool. Working well. After upgrade, used the Dell Vista ATI video driver listed above for better looking screen resolution. DVD via VLC player looks smoother with the ATI video driver. Just had to remove the ATI catalyst center from startup via Task Manager so won't get the MOM error on startup. Also using the Dell Touchpad driver to for touchpad scrolling.

Seems to work faster then XP with LibreOffice. Edge & Chrome browsers working well also. Plays DVD with VLC player with no issues. Thanks for the instruction!
